The Congress party on Tuesday intensified its attack on the Narendra Modi-led central government after petrol and diesel prices were increased by nearly 90 paise per litre across the country. The hike came less than a week after state-run oil companies ended a nearly four-year freeze on fuel prices. Congress, through its official X handle, accused the government of burdening the public with inflation and claimed fuel prices had risen by around ₹4 in just four days, pushing petrol prices to nearly ₹109 per litre and diesel to ₹96 per litre in several parts of the country.

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress alleged that the latest increase was only the beginning and further price hikes could follow now that elections are over. In its social media post, the party referred to Modi as the “Inflation Man” and accused the government of repeatedly increasing the financial pressure on common citizens. The opposition also highlighted concerns over rising transportation and essential commodity costs, which could be affected by the fuel price hike. The increase has once again sparked a political debate over inflation, fuel taxation, and the economic burden on middle-class families.
The fresh rise in petrol and diesel prices is expected to impact household budgets and transportation costs nationwide, while also intensifying the political confrontation between the ruling BJP government and the opposition Congress. With inflation already a key concern among citizens, the fuel hike is likely to remain a major issue in the coming days as political parties continue to trade sharp reactions over the economic situation in the country.
