The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Monday introduced car-pooling and limited work-from-home arrangements for its staff following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to reduce fuel and gold expenses. The decision was unanimously taken by the judges of the high court in Shimla and implemented with immediate effect through an official circular issued by the registrar general. Under the new rules, up to 50% of employees in each branch can work from home for a maximum of two days per week with prior approval.

According to the circular, the move aims to reduce fuel consumption while ensuring uninterrupted court administration. Registrars have been directed to prepare weekly rosters in advance so that sufficient staff remains physically present in offices. Employees working remotely must stay available on phone calls and report to the office whenever required. The circular also clarified that concerned registrars can modify or restrict work-from-home arrangements if they feel the system affects essential court operations. The measures were reportedly introduced in compliance with directives issued by the central government’s Department of Personnel.
The latest initiative by the Himachal Pradesh High Court reflects growing efforts by institutions to support fuel conservation and efficient resource management. The decision is expected to ease commuting pressure for employees while maintaining smooth administrative functioning. The move also aligns with the Centre’s broader appeal for responsible spending and energy-saving practices across the country.
