The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,127, according to Nepal Police, as rescue teams continue searching for thousands of people still missing a week after the disaster.
Police said hundreds of bodies have been recovered from several districts, including 348 in Chitwan, 217 in Nawalparasi East, 190 in Nawalparasi West and 155 in Nuwakot. So far, postmortem and legal identification procedures have been completed for 1,113 bodies, while 95 bodies have been handed over to their families. Details of 911 unidentified bodies have been uploaded to the Nepal Police website to assist families in identifying their missing relatives.
Security forces have rescued 6,541 people, while search operations remain underway for 4,858 missing people. Around 7,912 police personnel have been deployed for rescue operations, relief distribution, body recovery and clearing debris from blocked roads.
The flash floods struck northern and central Nepal on August 26 after an ice-and-rock collapse or avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered devastating floods across towns and villages. Rescue and relief operations remain underway in the affected areas.
