A massive flash flood struck Nepal’s mountainous Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday, washing away villages and infrastructure project sites and triggering fears of significant casualties and widespread damage. Authorities have issued urgent warnings to residents living along the Bhote Koshi River, asking them to move to higher and safer ground as the river continues to pose a serious threat.
The areas of Syapru Besi and Timure were among the worst affected, according to government officials. District administrator Narendra Pariyar said authorities had received reports of villages and infrastructure project sites being swept away by the powerful floodwaters. However, officials said there were no immediate estimates of casualties or the total extent of property damage. The flood was reported to have entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side, adding to concerns about rising water levels and further flooding downstream.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah said rescue and relief teams had been mobilised, with police and military personnel also deployed to assist with the emergency response. Authorities are carrying out rescue and relief efforts while assessing the damage across the affected areas. Residents along the river have been urged to remain extremely cautious and avoid staying near riverbanks as officials warn of possible further danger.
