Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in Chandigarh and sought his intervention in securing parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

During the meeting, Mann backed the request for parole on humanitarian grounds, highlighting the condition of Hawara’s ailing mother. The Chief Minister said that after nearly 31 years, his mother has renewed hope of meeting her son. Mann urged the Governor to consider the matter sympathetically in view of the family’s circumstances.
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who also serves as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, assured Mann that he would take up the matter with the Union Home Secretary. The development comes as the request for temporary relief for Hawara moves forward on humanitarian grounds.
