Europe is witnessing one of its most severe heatwaves on record, with soaring temperatures causing deaths, rising hospitalisations, and widespread disruption across several countries. The extreme weather has placed immense pressure on healthcare systems as authorities issue heat alerts and urge people to remain indoors during peak hours. According to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Europe is now the “fastest-warming continent on Earth.”

The unprecedented heat has also led to unusual scenes across the continent. Videos circulating on social media show chocolates melting inside stores, shopping carts and shoes warping under the intense sunlight, and bananas slipping out of their peels due to the excessive heat. In some areas, tram tracks and roads have reportedly been affected by the extreme temperatures, disrupting transport services.
Adding to the striking visuals, several viral videos show people cooking eggs, bacon, and other food items on frying pans left under direct sunlight, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave. Climate experts have warned that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change, reinforcing the need for stronger adaptation and mitigation measures across Europe.
