Government sources said online safety of children is a “fundamental principle” for every social media platform operating in India and is “non-negotiable.” The government has also made it clear that platforms could face action if they fail to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of minors on their services.
The government is also in discussions with other online platforms to ensure they take similar proactive measures to identify and remove harmful content involving children. The move signals a stronger push for social media companies to take greater responsibility for child safety and online protection in India.
