Telegram Ban to Be Lifted in India Today, But Some Restrictions Will Remain in Place

The temporary ban imposed on Telegram in India is expected to be lifted today following directives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Access to the messaging platform is set to be restored gradually across the country after authorities introduced the restriction ahead of the NEET-UG re-test. The move was aimed at curbing the spread of fake paper leak claims, misinformation, and other suspicious online activities. However, even after the ban is removed, the platform is not expected to return to full normalcy immediately.

According to reports, Telegram’s message-editing feature will remain restricted until June 30. Authorities believe that the feature was allegedly misused in certain instances to modify messages after they had been sent, making it difficult to track original content and potentially aiding the spread of misleading information. As a result, the government has decided to keep the feature disabled temporarily while continuing to monitor online activity and maintain transparency on the platform.

Although the process of lifting the ban has begun, users across India may not regain access at the same time. At the time of reporting, Telegram was still unavailable on some app stores, and services had not yet been restored on several networks. Experts say the restoration is likely to occur in phases through different telecom operators and internet service providers. Users have been advised to follow official announcements and remain patient as access to the platform is gradually reinstated nationwide.
